Civic and Social Responsibilities are key components in our lives. The Public Issues Community Service Program is designed to actively connect members with effective projects and activities relating to civic and social responsibilities and to increase awareness of crime prevention, safety, assisting veterans and the importance of good citizenship.
Comfort and aid to returning veterans and their families is one feature. Safety on the highways and in our communities are concerns of this program. Responding to natural disasters and emergencies comes under this heading. Effective legislation, especially for veteran affairs, needs to be carried out. Emphasis on citizenship and voting are important features, also. Projects reducing violence, fostering civic involvement, and increasing safety for all Americans.
Our Projects Include:
La Crescenta Woman’s Club pairs with the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena to collect donated cookies for “Operation Cookie”. They pack cookies in boxes to give these cookies to hospitalized and homeless veterans prior to Memorial Day. “Operation Cookie” is one of the philanthropic projects, which began over 70 years ago when members of the Club sent cookies to soldiers serving in World War II.
Cookies get delivered to Veterans Hospitals, Mental Health Centers and VA homeless centers throughout the southland; the Miller Foundation for Wounded Warriors; the Pasadena City College Salute to Veterans program; the Memorial celebration for Women Veterans at the Glendale YWCA, and South Pasadena’s Annual Memorial Day event at the War Memorial, to name a few. Cookies also have been sent to Camp Pendleton for a group of Marines (men & women) heading out.
